2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Trim Levels

The Volkswagen Tiguan is a sporty crossover SUV that offers a more athletic feel behind the wheel than most other SUVs in its class. It has an upscale cabin with lots of technology and convenience features, and it comes with the latest safety technology. For the 2022 model year, Volkswagen refreshed the exterior look to make it appear more like the larger Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. It received new LED headlights, an upgraded grille and front bumper, and new wheels. Inside, the Tiguan received a new steering wheel with touch controls, and heated front seats now come standard.

Powertrain

Every Tiguan gets power from the same engine.

• 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque
• Eight-speed automatic transmission
• Standard front-wheel drive
• Optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with a mechanical center differential and electronic locks for any model except the base S.

The Tiguan’s selectable drive modes allow the driver to make the most of any road and weather conditions with modes for On-Road, Off-Road, Snow, and Custom Off-Road. The On-Road mode has four additional settings that include Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom.

2022 Tiguan S

The entry-level Tiguan is the S, but even though it’s the base trim level, there is nothing basic about it. It comes with:

• 17-inch alloy wheels
• Standard LED exterior lighting all around
• Proximity key entry
• S trim models with front-wheel drive are the only model to come with three rows of seats and room for up to seven
• Standard heated front seats and cloth upholstery
• Models with the third row have 12 cubic feet of cargo space behind all three rows
• Up to 33 cubic feet of cargo space with both rear seats folded down

The 2022 Tiguan S has the new all-digital instrument cluster with an 8-inch screen that sits in front of the driver. The center stack has a 6.5-inch touch screen for the infotainment system, and it comes with a wired version of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hot spot. Volkswagen’s Car-Net app provides a Wi-Fi hot spot, allows you to access your smartphone apps from the dashboard screen, displays maps, music, and your text messages.

Standard safety features for the base include front and side assist and a rear cross-traffic alert system. It also has a rearview camera. A subscription-based Security & Service group for the Car-Net mobile app adds additional functions that allow you to lock and unlock all the doors, find your parked Tiguan if you have trouble locating it in a large lot, and remote start it.

2022 Tiguan SE

The Tiguan SE and the rest of the lineup are the same size as the S, and comes with two rows of seats. The cargo area measures the same, with the rear seats folded down. The Tiguan SE has all the equipment the S sports with additional features:

• 18-inch alloy wheels
• Power tailgate
• Auto-dimming side exterior mirrors
• Rain-sensing windshield wipers
• Optional panoramic sunroof

The SE trim level also adds some upgrades in the cabin to distinguish it from the base S:

• Upgraded leatherette upholstery on the seats
• Dual-zone automatic climate control
• Heated front seats
• Power-adjustable driver’s seat

Technology upgrades for the SE include a larger 8-inch touch screen and the addition of wireless charging. It also gains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, comes with four USB ports, voice-activated controls for the stereo system, comes standard with the Climatronic Touch interface for climate control.

The SE also comes with IQ Drive Safety Suite. This group is optional for the S, but all the safety systems come standard if you upgrade to the SE or higher. It includes a forward-collision warning feature with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. It also comes with Volkswagen’s Emergency Assist system, which will bring the Tiguan to a complete stop if needed when it determines that the driver is not responding to alerts.

2022 Tiguan SE R-Line Black

The sporty SE R-Line Black adds several blacked-out exterior features. It includes:

• 19-inch black-painted wheels
• Aggressive R-Line bumpers with black trim elements
• Black roof rails
• Black headliner
• Genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel

Inside, the SE R-Line Black has features to give it a sportier feel. These include:

• A black headliner
• Chrome trim elements on the doors and dashboard
• Ambient interior lighting
• A genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch controls and sliders to allow the driver to adjust the climate and control the stereo system while keeping their hands on the wheel
• Standard sunroof

The R-Line Black adds some more advanced safety features to its standard equipment. Bumping up to this trim level gets you front and rear parking sensors and adaptive foglights that will turn in the direction you steer.

2022 Tiguan SEL R-Line

The top-of-the-line Tiguan is the SEL R-Line. This model includes the features from the SE R-Line Black and comes with additional:

• All-wheel drive system
• 20-inch alloy wheels with a silver finish instead of the black from the SE R-Line Black
• LED grille accents
• Hands-free, foot-activated power liftgate
• Upgraded 10.3-inch driver digital gauge cluster
• Adaptive headlights

Inside, the SEL R-Line sports a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and ventilated front seats. It also features a power-adjustable passenger seat and ambient interior lighting. It gains some upgraded technology features such as integrated navigation, and a Fender stereo system.

This Tiguan SEL R-Line has all the driver aids from the lower trim levels and adds a few more. It comes with an upgraded version of the adaptive cruise control that can adjust the Tiguan’s speed by reading the posted speed limit signs. It also comes with a 360-degree surround-view parking camera, automatic high beam headlights, and a parking assist system.
