2022 Volkswagen Taos MPG Ratings

June 9th, 2022 by

Volkswagen continues to lead the automobile industry in manufacturing fun-to-drive vehicles for every segment. In the 1990s, they coined the term “farhvergnugen,” which derives from the German word “fahren” (“to drive”) and “vergnugen” (“pleasure”). It translates to “driving pleasure,” and the 2022 Volkswagen Taos delivers.

Suppose you’re looking for a capable, spirited, compact SUV to elevate your Streetsboro commute. In that case, the Taos offers the perfect balance of efficiency and drivability not typically found in this very competitive vehicle segment. As a new model, we thought we’d have our SUV experts break down the VW Taos to help you better understand what makes the Taos the logical choice as your next vehicle.

2022 Volkswagen Taos Fuel Economy Ratings

The VW Taos has the best fuel economy ratings in its class thanks to its 1.5-liter engine and compact, lightweight design. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s estimates, the front-wheel-drive model scored ratings of 28 mpg for city driving, 36 mpg when driving on the highway, and 31 mpg combined.

Opting for the all-wheel-drive version, you see a slight drop in fuel efficiency. VW Taos AWD models scored a 25 mpg rating for driving around town, 32 mpg on the freeway, and 28 mpg combined. However, most drivers consider that a good trade for the capability they gain from VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

2022 Volkswagen Taos Powertrain

It may sound small, but the VW Taos’ 1.5-liter engine delivers big performance thanks to its variable geometry turbocharger. This inline four-cylinder engine utilizes turbo stratified injection or TSI technology. TSI combines the power of a turbocharger with the efficiency and performance of direct fuel injection technology.

As a result, a smaller engine can produce more power with minimal fuel consumption. For example, the Taos’ 1.5-liter TSI engine provides 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen mates an eight-speed automatic transmission to this engine on front-wheel-drive models and the seven-seed dual-clutch with the AWD option.

2022 Volkswagen Taos Performance

In addition to the power and efficiency of the TSI engine, you get a capable front-wheel-drive platform standard on every trim. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive option delivers exceptional performance over various road and weather conditions if you’re searching for more traction and control. VW’s AWD system continuously monitors your Taos’ performance and intelligently delivers power between the axles to maximize your traction.

AWD models also feature the seven-speed automatic with a unique direct shift gearbox. This direct shift gearbox uses two clutches, one to engage the gear you need and the other to prepare the next likely gear for use. As a result, this transmission delivers smooth shifting with more power-on-demand.

In addition, the 4Motion AWD system features selectable drive modes to tune your Taos’s steering, throttle, and suspension to match driving conditions. For example, the Taos engine upshifts earlier in Snow mode, keeping it in a lower RPM range. This early upshift prevents the engine from delivering too much power too quickly to the wheels, enhancing traction.

The On-Road mode features four additional drive settings. Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom modes enable you to customize your drive for comfort and performance. Off-Road mode dials in your traction and control systems for when you leave the pavement behind. The Off-Road Custom mode lets you customize your steering and AWD settings to your preferences.

2022 Volkswagen Taos Trim Levels and Pricing

Volkswagen offers the Taos in three trim levels, S, SE, and SEL. As you move up in trim, you see additional features. Curb Appeal

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos proves you don’t have to be big to be bold. A honeycomb grille framed by LED headlights and trapezoidal air intake vents gives the Taos an aggressive front fascia. Taos’ eye-catching profile features square wheel wells and subtle contours. You can add the Basecamp body styling kit with fender flares, side door skid plates, and signature badging for a bolder design. In addition, you can upgrade to 19-inch alloy wheels.

An available premium Beats Audio system turns your music into recording studio-quality performances. VW offers IQ.Drive – a suite of driver-assist technologies designed to elevate your Streetsboro commute and help keep you safe.
