2021.5 Volkswagen Atlas Towing Capacity Specs
The Volkswagen Atlas offers two levels of towing capacity, based on the model’s trim level. Trim levels equipped with the VR6 engine require a factory-installed trailer hitch that generates a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The hitch is optional on the Atlas SE w/ Technology trim; it is a standard feature on the Atlas SEL and SEL Premium trim levels. All other models require the dealer- or port-installed trailer hitch, with a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.
Towing capacity means the maximum tow rating you can expect with the adequately equipped towing accessories. Your maximum towing capacity may be lower depending on how many passengers and how much cargo you are pulling, along with other vehicle accessories and options. Make sure you consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for full details on how to set up your towing excursion.
Additional Towing Assistance Features
Other features of your Atlas’ performance may also play a role in your trailering experience. The all-wheel-drive versions offer the Volkswagen 4MOTION system, which includes a feature known as Active Control. Active Control allows the driver to choose specific profiles designed around certain driving conditions, such as on-road, snow, off-road, and custom off-road.
The on-road setting lets you fine-tune things even further by choosing normal, sport, comfort, or individual sub-settings. These settings adjust engine, transmission, steering, and traction-assistance programs to fit your particular driving situation. Choosing these settings is as easy as operating a knob and push-button style interface. Pushing the button opens additional menus on the infotainment system to refine settings further.
Other important features that play a role in the safety of your towing experience include:
- The rearview camera system can provide views of the road that help you make lane changes, exit highways, or navigate into a parking spot.
- An overhead camera view lets you see the entire area you have to maneuver through when needed.
- Braking technologies include antilock brake systems, brake-pressure distribution, and hydraulic brake assist.
- 4MOTION Control includes hill-descent assist and hill-start assist if your journey takes you up and down elevations.
2021.5 Volkswagen Atlas Trim Level Differences
The 2021.5 Volkswagen Atlas comes in eight trim levels, offering you a choice between all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive power trains. The Atlas SUV comes with two powerful engines—a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or an available 3.6-liter VR6 engine. Both units feature start/stop technology.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine offers turbocharged induction and direct fuel injection to balance efficiency and power. Output is rated at 235 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque from 1,600 rpm (achieved with premium fuel). By comparison, Atlas trims with a 3.6-liter VR6 engine deliver 276 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 266 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. It’s that power that illustrates classic Volkswagen SUV towing capacity.
2021.5 VW Atlas Safety Features
You can also rest easy when towing, knowing that the Atlas has built-in safety features that could come in handy during towing. This includes features like the automatic post-collision braking system, which reflects a growing understanding that accidents have several different phases, some of which may be more dangerous than the initial collision.
The Atlas also includes Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System. This feature shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and switches on the hazard lights if the car is involved in certain types of collisions. The Atlas also includes the IQ.DRIVE advanced driver-assistance technology. This includes technology that will keep you centered in the lane, as well as a specially designed steering wheel to make driving easier. Depending on your trim, additional features may be included:
- Front and rear radar
- Front camera and ultrasound sensors
- Forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring
- Blind-spot monitor
- Rear traffic alert
Together, these features provide extra support for your driving experience, especially during a challenging towing trip.
