America has adopted the SUV as its favorite type of vehicle, due in part to the spaciousness, capabilities and styling found in many models. Two of the best SUVs come from Volkswagen, the 2018 Tiguan and the all-new 2018 Atlas. The Tiguan is completely redesigned for 2018, and bristles with the latest features and technologies. The 2018 Atlas is a larger SUV VW’s and boasts of a uniquely European driving experience. Both are excellent choices, so your space requirements might be an important factor for deciding which one to pick.

Powertrains

The 2018 Tiguan is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that makes 184 horsepower, 221 lb-ft of torque, and 1,500 lbs. of towing capacity. The engine is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the vehicle is available in FWD and 4Motion AWD configurations. The 2018 Atlas offers two engines: A 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6 delivering 276 horsepower, 266 lb-ft of torque and 5,000 lbs. of towing capacity. Either engine connects to an eight-speed automatic. Atlas is also available in FWD and AWD models.

Dimensions

The Atlas is about 13 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the Tiguan. Both offer seating for seven, but the third row in the Tiguan is optional. As you would expect for a larger vehicle, the Atlas provides a bigger cabin, but you might be surprised to learn that the Tiguan has more rear headroom. Tiguan provides 101.1 cubic feet of passenger space versus 153.7 for the Atlas.

Features

Both VW SUVs share many of the same features and technologies. The Atlas third row is more spacious and accessing it is easy, thanks to a 60/40-split second row that travels 7.7 inches front to back. The second row can be folded such that it can hold a child seat in place even as a passenger enters the third row. The Tiguan’s second row is split 40/20/40 and has dedicated air vents, USB ports, power outlets and an armrest. It too slides, reclines and folds flat to ease access to the optional third row. Both vehicles provide wide-ranging lists of standard and optional equipment, including standard CarPlay/Android Auto interface, Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. The choices of safety and convenience options on both vehicles are extensive.
