What’s New for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI?
The Volkswagen GTI, a progenitor of the hot-hatch class, has stood the test of time since it first graced the North American roads in 1983. And even after more than a dozen generations, the VW GTI is still the most practical and efficient compact hatchback on the market. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI is sold in four flavors, namely the GTI S, the GTI Sports, the GTI SE, and the GTI Autobahn. All models are four-doored as the two-door variation was discontinued for the 2017 model year. Buyers now get a choice between all-season and summer performance tires at no extra cost, and the Driver Assistance Package is available on all trim levels. The Sports model is new for 2017 and receives the Performance package as standard. Equipment standard to the S trim includes power windows and door locks, a touch-screen infotainment system, rearview camera, alloy wheels, air conditioning, cloth seating, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel controls, and cruise control. Leatherette/leather seating, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, push-button start, and power adjustable seats, among others, are also standard as you move up the trims. The exterior is extensively redesigned, but not so much as to render the new VW GTI unrecognizable. The surfaces are more refined with crisper character lines and a narrower horizontal grille. It now sits lower and appears more assertive than before. Soft-touch surfaces, high-quality materials, and piano-black accents characterize the interior. There are storage spaces and compartments everywhere from door panels to the center console and storage shelf. The rear loading space can be extended to 52.7 cubic feet when the rear seat is lowered.
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI is all about performance, and it does not disappoint. Under the hood of the VW Golf GTI is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that coughs out 210 horsepower @4,500 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque @1,500 rpm for the S model. The other three trims are furnished with the Performance package that increases the output to 220 horsepower @4,700 rpm. The engine powers the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed dual clutch DSG automatic is optional. A Golf GTI with the Performance package and the dual-clutch automatic transmission makes a 0-60 mph sprint in just 6.1 seconds. EPA estimates stand at 28 mpg combined (24 city/34 highway) and 27 mpg combined (24 city/32 highway) with the manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions respectively. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI does not compromise on safety. It was awarded IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ award with an “Advanced” rating on the collision prevention and mitigation and a highest possible score of Good on all crash tests. It also earned a five-star overall crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
